Still there are developers who have survived for decades in the spotlight. There are many independent studios that, though they have never made a game as big as Age of Empires, have kept going and done amazing things. You might have heard of them, they keep an impact on the industry. My personal choice at the time, like many others, was Age of Empires and Age of Empires II. AoK, I found more challenging, at least at first. AoE was for me a more inviting proposition as it felt the core stuff of civilization in all its glory. The new graphical style coming with AoK was more of a chore.
AoK is responsible for the opening act in the line. And though it has it's own flaws, they have been addressed over the years and it remains one of the better games in the series. But it all starts with the original Age of Empires. It felt special, not only for the innovations it brought to the table, but also for its coherent style. AoE has had a troubled relationship with real-time strategy at large. Let's face it, if anyone has a screwdriver, it is the real-time genre of the genre.
Also later, I playtested AoE. The mod era saw a lot of great things that could not be done with the original games and is responsible for some of the more imaginative stuff in the genre. But it also meant a lot of mods to be played at the same time. Several highly complex mods were a single package that was not suitable for older machines at the time, and lasted still with a mod manager, but it still didn't feel that great. Far better was the beforetime.lua (still kicking), an AoE2 mod which turned a few of the game to AoE1. That mod was done by Dark Lotus Studios, a real developer on the AoE scene, as is likely known.
Likewise, the Age of Kings game has gotten a series of additional civilizations added by new champions. So AoK now has ten more civilizations, bringing the total up to 60. Details here. Here is a link to the interview with the developer and his thoughts on the future of AoK: 7211a4ac4a
