Developing on everything Sinbad stands for, Hakuoki Kyoto Winds is a great one to start with if you want to experience the previous game before taking on Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms. With a pre-existing, tight story thread that sets things up well for the games, Hakuoki Kyoto Winds is a strong, fun romp, with a lot of choice, but still only one main story path. Taking place in the wildly different and exotic Edo, Hakuoki Kyoto Winds also expands on the lore of the Shinsengumi, with extra character and sub-stories, and all the Hakuoki trademark markers such as the 'Fandisk'. However, after so long now and immersion from the previous game, the new game feels a little odd, until you put it side-by-side with the original Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds. With a perfect sense of place and a wealth of character, the Shinsengumi is a character driven, and in my opinion, a much more developed story. If you want to jump straight in, start with Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds, and it'll feel like a true sequel to the other two games.
Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is an absolute must have if you want to complete the Hakuoki saga, and with the great PS Store release of original, the game it a must-have if you want to experience how the story unfolds. Taking place in the 'exciting and exotic' Edo Period, the game retains nearly all of the characterisation and tone of the original, as a group of six samurai take down bad guys, meet ladies and drink sake. However, the changes are very welcome, and include new areas and more characters, increased role options, expanded customization and more. As a word of warning, however, if you don't know your Hakuoki lore from your elbows, start with Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds first, as it sets up the story thread nicely, and the Edo content is much easier to follow.
Shinobu Ohtaka and her illustrious team have produced what is surely one of the most complete Hakuoki \"packages\" on the market, as it includes both the existing games (Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds and Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms), and also the Fandisc Content (Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi) for those people who missed it out on the 3DS game. 7211a4ac4a
