Erythema elevatum diutinum (EED) is a chronic vasculitis primarily involving the skin. In the vast majority of cases, the diagnosis of EED is based on clinical findings alone. The authors describe the case of a 52-year-old woman with an EED-like eruption that developed after a long-standing history of arthritic symptoms. Skin biopsy was performed because of diagnostic uncertainty and the authors identified pathognomonic leukocytoclastic vasculitis, resembling granulomatous dermatitis. The authors also report a distinctive form of EED in a patient with a systemic inflammatory disease and suggest that this presentation could represent a distinct form of EED or a manifestation of an underlying systemic disease.Transcatheter closure of a rare atrial septal defect using the Amplatzer Cardiac Plug.
We report a case of atrial septal defect (ASD) associated with patent foramen ovale (PFO) in a 15-year-old male with atrial septal aneurysm, and provide a detailed review of the literature on percutaneous ASD closure. A 15-year-old male with no significant past medical history presented with a four-year history of palpitations. An echocardiogram showed a secundum ASD measuring 1.8 cm, and an 11.6 mm PFO. A complete echocardiographic study revealed a septum primum to secundum atrial septal aneurysm with a left to right shunting at the level of the PFO. The ASD was also of sufficient size to warrant the consideration of interventional closure. The patient was successfully treated with percutaneous closure of the ASD using the Amplatzer Cardiac Plug.People with asthma may not have to go to the emergency room. They can be treated with a course of steroids.
A long-term study of patients with asthma conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center suggests that a steroid inhaler can be just as effective in stopping an asthma attack as a course of steroid injections.
Asthma attacks, also called asthma exacerbations, can be life-threatening. In the United States, it affects 14.8 million people and costs the health care system more than $4 billion each year. 0b46394aab
